All Virginia Conference churches are to cancel worship,
March 15, March 22, 2020
A message from Pastor Chuck Winner:SUMC WORSHIP AND ACTIVITY CANCELLATIONS
As a result of the growing spread of the COVID-19 our Bishop Lewis has
instructed all United Methodist Churches in the Virginia Conference to
cancel worship services for the next two Sundays, March 15th and March 22nd (see her message below).
After consultation with our church leadership we have decided to cancel
all church activities from March 13th through March 28th. To clarify, the following activities are now cancelled:
Both 8:30AM and 11AM Worship services for 3/15 and 3/22
All Sunday School classes
Sip and Chat for 3/15 and 3/22
All Youth Activities
Membership Class for 3/15 and 3/22
Tuesday’s Table for 3/17 and 3/24
Lenten Bible study for 3/17, 3/19, 3/24, and 3/26
His Bounty for 3/14, 3/21, and 3/28
LIFE Group Meetings for Pat Glassmyer, Lucy Anderson, and Carroll Deane
Choir Practice for Wednesdays 3/18 and 3/25
In addition, the church office will remain closed for the same period.
In the event of any emergency you may contact me at 804-384-7678. We will be closely monitoring the situation through Bishop Lewis’ office and will keep you informed as we go forward with updates to our schedules.
While this is not the time to panic, it is a time for reasonable precautions.
What is needed is prayer. As the Psalmist reminds us:
You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the
shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and
my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you
from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence...
(Psalm 91:1-3, NRSV)
A letter from Bishop Sharma D. Lewis
Dear Virginia Conference,
In monitoring the COVID-19 situation and the state of emergency announced by Governor Northam yesterday, all Virginia Conference churches are to cancel worship service for Sunday, March 15 and Sunday, March 22. I also strongly urge that any large gatherings at your church be postponed.
Public health officials have shared that with an abundance of caution we can help slow the spread of disease by practicing social distancing.
We have other ways to practice and show our faith. There are tips on the conference website here to learn how to livestream at your local church as well as a list of churches around the state that livestream their services or record them for later viewing.
Please remain in prayer for those most vulnerable in our communities as well as those suffering from COVID-19 and their families. Also, please pray for leaders and healthcare professionals in the United States and worldwide who are working to contain this pandemic and find a vaccine.
Also, it cannot be said enough, please continue to use best practices by regularly washing your hands, avoid touching your face and monitoring updates from local officials on how to best care for yourself and your loved ones during this time.
Peace and Blessings,
Bishop Sharma D. Lewis
